Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Alcaraz form a mountain system among three Spanish regions: Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia. They are characterized by its calcareous nature that conditions the relief and hydraulic system.
The rocky landscape is covered mainly by pine forest (Pinus nigra, P. pinaster, P. halepensis) and perennials oakwoods (Quercus ilex ssp. ballota). One characteristic feature are the so-called “calares”, huge altiplanes of calcareous rock over 1000 m high, surprisingly flats on the top. Rainfall is collected in its karstic insides and expelled in sources at lower altitudes. The most impressive surge it’s the birth of the río Mundo, that falls 80 meters above the floor.
