On April 11, 2018, the Southcliff POA Board of Directors approved a “No Bikes on Trails” policy for all Southcliff hiking trails.
The Trails Committee has posted signs at various locations on the trails as reminders of the new policy. To see what the sign will look like, click on link at the bottom of this notice.
Background
The rationale behind this policy is:
· The Southcliff trails were not designed or built for safe bicycle use.
o Blind curves on the trails significantly limit visibility bikers or hikers would have of each other’s location, posing a serious safety hazard for both.
o Switchbacks on narrow trails, many of which have steep drops at the edge, would be extremely hazardous for bikes to navigate.
o Segments with steep grades, often including steps, would be dangerous for bikers.
o Many narrow bridges do not have guard rails.
o Water bars on the trails could be dangerous for a bike to cross.
o Riding bikes on trails that are not designed for bike use causes damage to the trail surface.
o Bike traffic often causes deep ruts which increase soil erosion.
o Water bars can be loosened and dislodged.
o Steps can be loosened or damaged.
o Increased maintenance cost.
