Oedipus Rex

The story of Oedipus shows tragedy at its best, according to a philosopher named Aristotle. We'll read some from the book, but most of the reading will be from a version created by yours truly -- to make you laugh, but hopefully let you know what the story means, too.

After reading Oedipus, you'll need to know the following:

*characteristics of a tragic hero

*plot elements of Oedipus Rex

*identify: foreshadowing, direct & indirect characterization, irony (dramatic, situational, verbal)

*define: hubris, hamartia, catharsis

*describe the following characters: Oedipus, Creon, Jocasta, Tieresius, shepherd, Chorus

+ be able to describe how the god Apollo affects this play
