How To Transition From Skating Forward To Backward

How To Transition From Skating Forward To Backward on Roller-Blades and inline skates

Once you have learned the basic backward motion, you will want to learn how to transition from forward to backwards. There are a number of ways to accomplish a transition. Mastering the transition from forward to backward will allow you to start skating forward and keep your speed as your transition to skating backwards. In the videos that follow I use a basic spin transition or what looks like a spin transition - actually what I do is skate forward, start to turn slightly like I am going to spin and the lift up one skate, flip it around so it is facing backward, shift my weight to the backward facing skate, lift the other skate and flip it around so it is also facing backwards. (I may describe and create a video of other types of transitions later - check back)

1) In picture 1, I have just pushed with my left foot and am beginning to lift my left foot. All my weight is now on my right foot.

2) In picture 2, I am pivoting/turning my left foot so it begins to face backwards. At the same time, my right foot is turning to the left slightly.

3) In picture 3, I continue pivoting/turning my left foot.

4) In picture 4, I transfer my weight to my left foot.

5) In picture 5, I lift and turn/pivot my right foot

6) In picture 6, I place my right foot back on the ground and transfer my weight back to my right foot.

7) In picture 7 and 8, I skate backward using an S motion to push with my skates.

INLINE SKATING TRANSITIONS NOTE: Transitioning from Skating forwards to backwards on inline skates is very similar to transitioning from skating forwards to backwards on ice skates and transitioning from skating forwards to backwards on roller skates. Once you have mastered transitions for one type of skating, you can apply it to the others.
