Standard 2: Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships
RN practice is based on purposefully engaging in effective therapeutic and professional relationships. This includes collegial generosity in the context of mutual trust and respect in professional relationships.
The registered nurse:
2.1 establishes, sustains and concludes relationships in a way that differentiates the boundaries between professional and personal relationships
2.2 communicates effectively, and is respectful of a person’s dignity, culture, values, beliefs and rights
Effective teamwork and communication among healthcare professionals is essential to ensure the quality and safety of patient care (Garbee et al., 2013). Effective communication could also help to maintain multidisciplinary teamwork in a healthcare environment, which plays a critical role in patient health outcomes. Moreover, effective communication could prevent errors happening in clinical settings.
2.3 recognises that people are the experts in the experience of their life
Patients know more about their own bodies and their health preferences than we do (Vaismoradi, Jordan, & Kangasniemi, 2015), so it's important to involve patients in their health discussions, they can not only provide nurses information about their own physical condition, but also help nurses to improve their care plans.
2.4 provides support and directs people to resources to optimise health-related decisions
Nurses provide patient education could improve patient health literacy and provide them information for their future decision makings.
2.5 advocates on behalf of people in a manner that respects the person’s autonomy and legal capacity
I want my patients to feel comfortable and trustful of their care, so it is important to try to build positive and professional relationships with each patient. Nurses need to respect and value the patient's culture and religious beliefs.
2.6 uses delegation, supervision, coordination, consultation and referrals in professional relationships to achieve improved health outcomes
2.7 actively fosters a culture of safety and learning that includes engaging with health professionals and others, to share knowledge and practice that supports person-centred care
To achieve patient-centered purposes, nurses need to know the health literacy of patients or their families, provide the necessary patient education, listen to their health aspirations, and work together in a multidisciplinary manner to achieve personalised care plan and health plan as much as possible.
2.8 participates in and/or leads collaborative practice, and
2.9 reports notifiable conduct of health professionals, health workers and others.
As a nursing student and a future registered nurse, I should report to my superiors and seniors when I encounter unclear and confused events at work, which will not only dispel my concerns and doubts, but also reduce the possibility of errors developing and occurrence .
