History

1972 – 1979

In 1972, Brewer State Junior College personnel from Fayette began teaching academic classes in Tuscaloosa.  One hundred and twelve students were enrolled.  Dr. Charles Davis was the President of Brewer State Junior College in Fayette.

From 1972 to 1974, Brewer State Junior College personnel taught night classes in classrooms at Shelton State Technical College on 15th Street.  During this time, the college provided bus services to students in its multi-county service area and bused students from Tuscaloosa to the campus in Fayette.  Realizing that it is less expensive to send instructors to Tuscaloosa, the college hired part-time instructors and offered additional classes at night at Shelton State Technical College.  Nearly 150 students were enrolled in the winter 1973 and spring 1974 classes, and 100 students were enrolled in the summer 1974 classes.  During the summer 1974, lab classes for chemistry and biology were taught at Tuscaloosa County High School.

Once the college began to offer a larger range of classes and services in Tuscaloosa, in August of 1974, BSJC rented the old Jemison Elementary School building, located in front of the Rosedale Baptist Church on Greensboro Avenue.  Thirteen courses were offered during the day, four days a week, and 12 night courses were also offered.

Day courses included American history, American national government, basic college math, college algebra, English composition, fundamentals of speech, survey in physics, art appreciation, introduction to sociology, general psychology, painting, and music appreciation.

Night classes included accounting, economics, English composition, physical geography, college mathematics, art appreciation, health science, Western civilization, American history, trigonometry, American national government, and general psychology.

Registration for day classes was held on September 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Night class registration was held the same day from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Tuition was $6.50 per quarter hour or a maximum of $67.50 for a quarter of classes (12 or more hours).

The center employed more than 16 part-time instructors, in addition to the full-time instructors listed below.

George McCormick was the Dean of the new branch campus.
