Formation Year at the College

 

Note:  Some groups formed and operated for a short time, from one semester to a year or two.  Generally, these short-term groups are not included in this list.  These short-term groups include the New Booster Club (2000-2002), the Buc Wild Crew Club (2004), the C-3 Club (1998), the Chess Club (2004), Club Unity (1999), the Forensics Club (2003), the Shelton State Book Club (2004), the Spanish Club (1995-1998?), and International Friends group (2000).

 

Afro-American Culture Association    1980?  An article in the Spring 1985 issue of The Courier said that the group had just re-established itself on the campus after an absence of more than 2 years.  In Spring 1985, the group had 26 active members and 67 applications for membership.  This group was still mentioned in club announcements in The Courier in 2000.  The Monday Report newsletter featured many articles about this organization beginning in 1982 (see Monday Report Index).

Association of Respiratory Care Students   Founded 2007.  The Shelton State Association of Respiratory Care Students (SSARCS) is open to students who are enrolled in any approved respiratory therapy program or students enrolled in courses in preparation for the program.

Campus Ministries    Sep 1999?  Shelton State offers opportunities for student organizations that represent major faiths and denominations to provide ministry to the College community.  Currently, the only active organization is Baptist Campus Ministries (BCM), a Christian student organization, open to all students.  This group was mentioned in an article in the Sep 16 1999 issue of The Courier.  The group may have been meeting since the mid-1990s.

Circle K    1996?  A Courier newspaper article in the Sep 16 1999 issue lists the officers, advisor, and meeting times.  An article in Oct 1999 mentions a book drive sponsored by the organization.  The group was meeting through 2008 and possibly later.

Corsairs Fencing Club    Fall 1983  An article in the Fall 1988 issue of The Courier newspaper said that the group formed in the fall of 1983 when Dr. Bruce Bizocco began teaching fencing classes at the college.  In 1984, the club began competing with other clubs in competitions.  Active until Dr. Bizocco retired from the college in the early 2000s.

Ecology Club    1982?  Group is mentioned in an article in the Winter 1985 issue of The Courier.  A listing in the Fall 1988 issue of The Courier inidcated that the group was meeting in 1988.  The Monday Report mentions an Ecology Club Newsletter in 1990 (Monday Report Index entry for Albritton, Lee).  Dr. Lee Albritton was the sponsor.  The group continued until Dr. Albritton retired from the college about 2012.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes    Apr 9 2001.  First meeting was held on Apr 9 2001.

Karate Club  1982?  Founded by Jon Lee, karate instructor.  An article in the Winter 1984 issue of The Courier indicated that the group competed in tournaments that year.

Phi Theta Kappa     May 1979 to present  Note: Information regarding this date and the first chapter president and advisor will be found on the Phi Theta Kappa webpage in the Shelton State Archives. 

Psi Beta Honor Society    Founded Apr 12 2010.  A chapter of Psi Beta, the national honor society for psychology students at community colleges, was recently chartered at Shelton State Community College.  Psi Beta is a national honor society for community college students interested in psychology and the application of psychology to real lives.  It is recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.  Psi Beta participates with the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society and actively contributes to regional psychology conventions.

Shelton State Alumni Association     1980 (?) to present  Note:  By 1984 the Alumni Association was posting information in the college newspaper about a scholarship they were offering to a student.   See Courier newspaper issue for March 20 1984.  The Monday Report newsletter included many articles about this organization beginning in 1982.  See the Monday Report Index.

Shelton State Ambassadors    1988 to present.  An article in the Fall 1988 issue of The Courier said that the group was one of the newest groups on campus.

Shelton State Bass Fishing Club    Formed Feb 2018.  There have been announcements in the college's weekly e-newsletter, Shelton 411.

Shelton State Booster Club (Baseball booster club)  1985?  An article in the Winter 1985 issue of The Courier said that the group had more than 50 members, and the purpose of the group was to pay for road trips for the baseball team, and for the baseball uniforms.  The membership fee to join was $50.

Shelton State Nursing Association  1980?  Nursing was taught at J. P. Shelton Technical College since the 1950s.  When the Tuscaloosa campus of Brewer State Junior College merged with J. P. Shelton Technical College on January 1 1979, the nursing program continued to be taught at the technical college.  The date of 1980 is placing the formation of the organization for Shelton State Community College to just after the colleges were merged.  Actually, there may have been a nursing organization at the J. P. Shelton Technical College prior to this date.  The group is now known as the Association of Nursing Students.

Student Government Association  1998?  An article indicated that the group was meeting and announcing officers in Fall 1998.  There was another officers election in late spring 1999.
