SHELTON STATE TERRIFIC TUESDAY CONCERT SERIES

TO FEATURE REBECCA HAN AND LUKE TURNER

Tuscaloosa, Alabama – Shelton State Community College’s Terrific Tuesday Concert Series will feature pianists Rebecca Han and Luke Turner on Tuesday, January 31 at 1:00 p.m. in the Alabama Power Recital Hall on the Martin Campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Pianist Rebecca Han is a five time state winner in the Alabama Music Teachers Association piano solo division, as well as being a 2013 and 2016 honorable mention and 2012, 2014, and 2015 winner in the piano concerto competition of AMTA. Ms. Han has also performed as concerto soloist with the Tuscaloosa Youth Orchestra in 2012, 2014, and 2016. Rebecca is the student of Dr. Pamela Penick through the University of Alabama’s Community Music School and her proud parents are Yang Zhao and Dr. Luoheng Han. She has studied piano since she was four years old. An 11th grader at Northridge High School, she is a member of multiple school organizations including the newspaper, Key Club, Girls Learn International, Scholars’ Bowl, Beta Club, All-Academic Team, and Debate Team. She is also a Teen Leader at the Children’s Hands-On Museum.

Luke Turner is 13 years old and in the 7th grade. He started piano lessons at age four at the Community Music School at the University of Alabama. In 2015, Luke was a winner in both the Piano Solo and Concerto divisions of the Alabama Music Teacher’s Association Competition, and later that year, he won the 2015 Blair Piano Competition at Vanderbilt University. In 2016, he was the Grand Prize winner at the Young Artist Achievement Awards Competition in Nashville, TN. Also that year, he placed first in the sixth grade division of the Tennessee Music Teachers Association competition. He was runner-up in the 2016 Curb Youth Symphony Concerto Competition in Nashville, TN, and also recently received second place in the junior division of the Music Teachers National Association competition in Tennessee. Luke’s previous piano teachers are Dr. Alison Clough (Samford University) and Dr. Pamela Penick (University of Alabama), and he currently studies with Dr. Heather Conner (Vanderbilt University) and Dr. Kevin Chance (University of Alabama). Luke is a Myra Jackson Blair Junior Scholar at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University.

Shelton State’s Terrific Tuesday Concert Series is designed to showcase a variety of repertory styles. Weekly performances are offered by guest artists as well as Shelton State faculty and students.
