THEATRE TUSCALOOSA’S SEASON OPENER TO FEATURE HIT SONGS OF THE 1950s & 60s

(TUSCALOOSA, AL) – Theatre Tuscaloosa presents its season opener, The Marvelous Wonderettes, September 30-October 9 in the Bean-Brown Theatre on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College.

Written and created by Roger Bean, this smash off-Broadway hit takes audiences first to the 1958 Springfield High School prom and then to the 10-year reunion of Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts! As audiences learn about their lives and loves over a decade, the girls serenade us with classic '50s and '60s hits like "Lollipop," "Dream Lover," "Son of a Preacher Man," and "It's My Party."

“The songs and harmonies of the girl groups of the 50s and 60s are memorably magical,” says Tina Turley, Executive Producer of Theatre Tuscaloosa. “Audiences will love this show and will be singing the songs all the way home; it’s too fun to miss!”

The Marvelous Wonderettes is directed and choreographed by Stacy Alley, Associate Professor of Musical Theatre and Dance at The University of Alabama. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from The University of Alabama, a Bachelor in Arts from The University of Southern California, and is a Certified Movement Analyst through the Laban/Bartenieff Institute. Alley has directed and choreographed in Norway, Scotland, Chile, and various theaters throughout the United States. Her work with Theatre Tuscaloosa includes Bye Bye Birdie, Gypsy, and The Drowsy Chaperone.

“I am so excited about the opportunity to direct/choreograph it again (after doing it for SummerTide in Gulf Shores this summer),” says Alley. “I fell in love with it the first time around and now enjoy seeing how this new cast brings exciting ideas and challenges to the work.”

The production team includes Terry Moore, music director; Andy Fitch, scenic designer; Jeanette Waterman, costume designer; Wheeler Kincaid, lighting designer; Max Blevins, sound designer; and Meredith Parr, stage manager.

The four girls are played by Theatre Tuscaloosa newcomers Catherine Bradwell (Betty Jean), Ally Bryant (Cindy Lou), Carli Hardon (Missy), and Anna Lee Hawkins (Suzy).

“The Marvelous Wonderettes is so much fun and will take many down memory lane,” says Alley. “Audiences are sure to fall in love with it just like I did.”

Theatre Tuscaloosa’s 2016-2017 Season: Share the Dream is presented in cooperation with Shelton State Community College and is made possible with support from the City of Tuscaloosa and Mercedes Benz. The Marvelous Wonderettes is supported by BF Goodrich and Jamison Money Farmer.
