SHELTON STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE PREPARES FOR BEST COMPETITION

Tuscaloosa, Alabama – Shelton State Community College is preparing to host the fourth annual “Shelton’s BEST” robotics competition.

On Thursday, September 17, Shelton’s BEST Kick-Off will allow registered schools to learn specific rules and see the playing field. Shelton’s BEST Game Day, scheduled for Saturday, October 31, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., is open to the public with no charge for admission.

BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) is a non-profit, volunteer based program designed to inspire students through competitive robotic design. Through exploration and creativity, student teams are encouraged to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. Additionally, Shelton’s BEST provides opportunity for marketing-based skills. The marketing category of competition allows students to brand and advertise their school’s robotic concept. All teams have the opportunity to be mentored by engineers and technical professionals from local industry.

“BEST is unique because it offers students another creative outlet while obtaining experience in the worlds of robotics, engineering, and marketing,” said Beth Patrick, Instructional Outreach Specialist at Shelton State. “Robots are a major component in the future success of industry and manufacturing. It is important for West Alabama students to develop skills to successfully enter the workforce.”

All public, private, and home schools are invited to participate in Shelton’s BEST. For more information, visit www.sheltonstate.edu/best.
