SSCC Employees Recognized at ACCS Chancellor’s Awards Banquet

Tuscaloosa -- Four Shelton State Community College employees were recognized last week at the 2013

Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Chancellor’s Awards ceremony in Birmingham last week.

The Chancellor’s Awards are presented each year in four categories: Administrator of the Year, Academic

Faculty Member of the Year, Technical Faculty Member of the Year, and Support Staff Member of the

Year. Each community college within the state nominates one employee for each of the categories. The

2013 nominees for Shelton State were:

Administrator of the Year: Rhonda Smith has worked at Shelton State for 32 years, starting as a workstudy

in 1981, and becoming a full-time employee in 1983. She has worked in various departments

including nursing, recruiting, advising, business services, and financial aid. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree

in Business Administration and a Master’s in Higher Education.

Academic Faculty of the Year: Renna Clements is a graduate of The University of Alabama at

Birmingham and has twenty-two years of teaching experience. Mrs. Clements is passionate about civic

engagement and teaching sociology.

Technical Faculty of the Year: Scheree Datcher is a graduate of Alabama State University at

Montgomery, Alabama and The University of West Alabama at Livingston, Alabama with 18 years of

teaching experience. She serves as the division chair and instructor for the Office Administration Program.

Mrs. Datcher served as SSCC 2013 representative with the American Heart Association and is an active

member of many business education associations. Mrs. Datcher is very passionate about making sure that

her students are prepared for tomorrow’s workforce.

Support Staff Member of the Year: Shannon Chandler is the Coordinator of Community Education &

Life Long Learning at Shelton State. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications from The

University of Alabama and a Master’s Degree from The University of West Alabama. She has been on

staff at Shelton State since 2007.

The Chancellor’s Awards began 27 years ago in the ACCS as a way to reward and encourage those who

have exemplified outstanding performance, creativity, and dedicated service to their college.
