Tuscaloosa – Shelton State Community College will once again sponsor “Team Shelton” in the fourth annual

Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes to be held at Bama Belle Park in Tuscaloosa on September 15, 2012. The walk

is sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, the only organization committed to helping children and

adults with all types of diabetes, as well as those at risk. The ADA works each and every day with one vision in

mind – a life free of diabetes.

Every 17 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes. Alabama is ranked 1st in the U.S. and its territories for

the prevalence of diabetes with approximately 561,000 Alabamians affected. About 3,000 youth are estimated to

have diabetes (types 1 & 2) in Alabama. Diabetes is a disease that has serious consequences, and there is no

cure.

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise for people with diabetes and helps to control glucose levels; and

Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes provides an opportunity for people come together for a fun, healthy activity.

Proceeds from Step Out benefit the Association, which funds diabetes research, delivers services to hundreds of

communities, and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. Diabetes is a major cause of heart

disease and stroke. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
