FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THEATRE TUSCALOOSA ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR GYPSY

TUSCALOOSA, AL - Theatre Tuscaloosa will hold open auditions for its upcoming production of Gypsy on Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11, in the Bean-Brown Theatre at Shelton State Community College’s Martin Campus (9500 Old Greensboro Rd).

Gypsy has roles for male and female children, teens, and adults. Children 12 and under will audition at 6pm each night, and teens and adults will audition at 7:30pm each night. Those who audition should:

1) prepare 16 bars of a musical theatre song (bring sheet music in the correct key and be prepared to sing the entire song if requested – an accompanist will be provided; recorded music will not be allowed)

2) wear appropriate clothing that will allow them to move comfortably for the movement portion of the audition

3) be prepared to read from the script (no prepared monologue required)

4) bring a comprehensive list of potential rehearsal conflicts.

Additionally, It is recommended to present a headshot and acting resume if available.

Scripts of Gypsy are now available to read in the Ticket Office for those who wish to read the musical in advance (recommended). Scripts may not leave the premises, however. The Ticket Office is open Monday-Thursday 9am-5pm and Fridays 9am-noon.

Rehearsals will begin in May. The rehearsal schedule will be finalized after casting, but rehearsals are generally Monday through Friday evenings and some Sunday afternoons and/or evenings. There will not be rehearsals on most Saturdays.

Suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy was written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It is considered to be one of the greatest Broadway musicals ever written. Gypsy tells the story of the ultimate “stage mother” who is willing to go to any lengths to transform her daughters into winning stars. Mama Rose (played by one of Tuscaloosa’s great leading ladies – Ava Buchanan) creates a touring vaudeville show for her daughters, but growing up on stage leads to unintended consequences as one daughter abandons show biz while the other finds fame in the world of burlesque. Full of memorable songs like “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and “Let Me Entertain You,” it is sure to be an amazing experience.

Gypsy is directed by Theatre Tuscaloosa’s Artistic Director Emeritus Paul K. Looney; choreographed by Stacy Alley; and musical direction is by Leslie S. Poss.

Gypsy will be presented July 13-22 at the Bean-Brown Theatre on Shelton State Community College’s Martin Campus. Performances will be at 7:30 pm Thursdays through Saturdays and at 2pm on Wednesday and Sundays. A Pay-What-You-Can dress rehearsal will be presented on Thursday, July 12, at 7:30pm. More details are available at www.theatretusc.com or by phone at 205.391.2277.
