(Tuscaloosa) – The Shelton State Association of Nursing Students received three awards during the 2010 Annual Alabama Association of Nursing Students Convention held in Mobile September 30 to October 1.

The “Breakthrough to Nursing Award” was presented for the organization’s work to encourage recruitment and retention of students in nursing, targeting non-traditional as well as traditional students; use of broad-based strategies which consider ethnic diversity, gender, and age; promoting transcultural awareness in nursing schools and in the community; and encouraging and promoting mentorship programs.

The organization also was awarded as “Top State Fundraising Project” for its work on behalf of the state organization initiative to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Kathryn Bryant from Shelton State was named “Outstanding Chapter President.” The award recognizes the school chapter President for outstanding leadership skills and accomplishments during their term. Her successfulness in increasing membership and implementing worth community, legislative, and “Breakthrough to Nursing” projects are a few of the areas cited in making the award.
