Shelton Singers Perform In Choral Festival

Tuscaloosa ‐ On Thursday, November 4, the Alabama chapter of the American Choral Directors

Association held its 8th Annual Collegiate Choral Festival at Trinity United Methodist Church, in

Huntsville, Alabama.

The Shelton Singers, under the direction of Glinda Blackshear, presented three works. Dr. Mark

Brown conducted an a cappella setting of "Shenandoah" by James Erb. Then, with Ms.

Blackshear at the podium, the choir sang a new composition by Andrea Ramsey entitled

"Through the Dark," with a text from the writings of Helen Keller. The Shelton Singers concluded

their presentation with "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel?", a spiritual arranged by the late Moses

Hogan, featuring a trio of Jessica O'Bryant, Amber Abrams, and Allison Burroughs.

The non‐competitive event featured 15 choirs from two and four‐year colleges and universities

from around Alabama. They received comments from clinician Dr. Daniel J. Bara, newly

appointed Director of Choral Activities at the University of Georgia.

Choirs from Snead State Community College, Oakwood University, Northeast Alabama

Community College, University of Alabama‐Birmingham, Wallace State Community College,

University of Alabama – Huntsville, University of North Alabama, Samford University, Calhoun

Community College, Talladega College, Shelton State Community College, Jacksonville State

University, Jefferson State Community College, Alabama A & M University, and Auburn

University, participated.

“This was an opportunity for many of us who teach in isolation to interact in a musical

environment with our fellow choir directors. Most importantly, it is a great opportunity for our

students to see a wide range of choirs from all over the state, hear a variety of wonderful

repertoire, and meet other student singers who are enthusiastic about singing in a choir,” said

festival organizer, Dr. Patricia Corbin, Director of Choral Activities at Jacksonville State

University.
