SHELTON STATE NURSING PROGRAM PINS GRADUATES
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Shelton State Community College Nursing Program honored 65 graduates at its
Spring 2010 Pinning Ceremony recently at the Martin Campus, 9500 Old Greensboro Road.
The symbolic tradition of the nursing pin and the ceremonial pinning originated in the 1860s at the Nightingale
School of Nursing Hospital in London. The nursing pin the graduates received is a type of badge, awarded by the
program’s faculty as a symbolic welcome into the profession.
Along with the pinning ceremony, several awards were presented to outstanding students. The nursing faculty
and students present the Nightingale Award to the student who demonstrates excellence within the nursing
program in clinical competence, leadership, and personal qualities. The recipients representing different tracks
in the nursing program were Ashley Smith (Mobility Track) of Northport and Kat Willingham (Generic Track)
of McCalla.
The Shelton State Association of Nursing Students (SSANS) Leadership Award is initiated by the members of
the SSANS and is given in recognition of outstanding participation in the SSANS. The award is
presented to a SSANS member who has demonstrated leadership, dedication, and enthusiasm for the nursing
profession through involvement in the organization. The recipient of the 2010 award is Kimberly Loewe of
Brookwood.
Also given by the Shelton State Association of Nursing Students, the SSANS Fellowship Award is presented to a
student for demonstrating humanitarian traits, unselfishness, helpfulness to others, consideration, humility, and
loyalty to the nursing program. Northport’s Akwi Fonbah and Gary Parker were this year’s recipients.
The Outstanding Associate Degree Nursing Student Award is presented to the graduating ADN student who has
a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and demonstrates exemplary behavior both in the classroom and clinical
setting. This year’s recipients are Angela Rose (Generic Track) of Greensboro and Ashley Mills (Mobility Track)
of Northport.
