SHELTON STATE SUMMER ENROLLMENT INCREASE STILL IN DOUBLE DIGITS

TUSCALOOSA – Enrollment numbers continue to rise at Shelton State Community College, as this summer

currently 20 percent more students are taking 25 percent more credit hours than in summer of 2009.

Following the first week of classes and the drop/add period that ended June 10, the College enrolled 4,566

students for 33,526 credit hours, which is the highest summer semester enrollment for the College since 2005. A

five-year study of summer enrollment also reveals a 25 percent increase over the total of 3,418 enrolled in 2006.

The record enrollment marks the fifth consecutive semester with double-digit increases over the prior year.

Smaller class size, more affordable tuition than four-year institutions in the state, and the current economy are a

few of many reasons why Shelton State President Dr. Mark Heinrich feels that the College’s numbers continue to

rise. Heinrich also sees the growth as a movement towards achieving Shelton 2020, the College’s strategic

enrollment plan that calls for 12,000 students by the year 2020.

“We certainly are encouraged to see the continued rise in the number of people who are taking advantage of

what Shelton State has to offer,” said Heinrich. “It is obvious that the residents of West Alabama understand that

this College is here to positively impact our community. At the same time, however, we all understand the need

to remain diligent and continue to develop our programs and offerings to meet community demand. I am

confident that will happen at Shelton State because of the efforts of the dedicated faculty and staff who work to

provide our students with excellent instruction and support.”
