NEW TRUCKS HELP TO UPGRADE SHELTON STATE PROGRAM
TUSCALOOSA – Shelton State Community College has added two new 2010 International ProStar Limited
tractor-trailers to its Truck Driving Technology Program.
The state-of-the-art trucks will enable instructors to provide training for students in some of the most current
industry equipment. Each truck has a Cummins ISX 435 Horsepower Smart Torque Engine with a 10-speed
manual transmission that will get an estimated 6 to 6.5 miles per gallon. The trucks utilize Ultra Low Sulfur
Diesel fuel that is designed to reduce exhaust emissions, both are also equipped with after market treatment
systems to help further reduce emissions and feature full aerodynamic designed for increased fuel economy.
Both the tractors and 53-foot trailers are also complete with ABS systems and feature improved instrument
clusters.
The Shelton State Truck Driving Technology Program is an eight-week program that meets Monday
through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., and Friday, 7:30 a.m. – Noon. Courses are taught year-round. The
course of instruction is to prepare students for entry-level positions in the industry as a tractor-trailer driver or
straight truck driver. Students will receive classroom, range, and highway training for Class “A” (tractor-trailer)
or Class “B” (straight truck) Commercial Driver’s License with air brake, tank, hazardous materials, and
doubles/triples endorsements when applicable. Upon successfully passing the Commercial Driver’s License
written exam and skills requirements, the student will receive his/her operator’s license from the Alabama
Department of Public Safety and a certificate of completion from Shelton State Community College.
The program offers continuous registration on a first-come, first-serve basis, but classes are limited to eight
