SHELTON STATE NURSING PROGRAMS RECEIVE ACCREDITATION

TUSCALOOSA – The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) has granted the Shelton

State Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program continuing accreditation along with initial

accreditation for the College’s Practical Nursing Program.

Both Shelton State Community College nursing programs were visited last spring by NLNAC. NLNAC is

responsible for the specialized accreditation of nursing education programs, both post-secondary and higher

degree, that offer a certificate, a diploma, or a recognized professional degree (Clinical Doctorate, Master’s/Post-

Master's, Baccalaureate, Associate Degree, Diploma, and Practical Nursing). The Associate Degree program was

established in 1982 and has been accredited by NLNAC since l986. Its next evaluation visit is scheduled for

Spring 2018. The Practical Nursing Program, the older of the two programs, was established in 1953. Its next

evaluation is scheduled for Spring 2015. The Alabama Board of Nursing also approves both programs.

“We are especially proud of this accomplishment,” said Gladys Hill, Assistant Dean of Health Services. “The

writing of the self study report and process was invaluable. It helped us identify areas of strengths and where we

need to improve. The nursing faculty and staff should be commended for the tremendous amount of work put

in this process and their commitment to educating nursing students.”
