SHELTON STATE’S MOHUN NAMED JUNIOR COLLEGE COACH OF THE YEAR

BIRMINGHAM – The Birmingham Tip-Off Club honored Shelton State Community College Men’s Basketball Coach Barry Mohun on Monday, awarding him the 2009 Glen Clem Award as the Junior College Coach of the Year. Mohun is the only recipient to receive the award more than once.

Mohun is in his 11th season (279-82) as the head coach of the Buccaneers, (28-2, 16-0), who are currently riding a 28-game win streak. The Bucs are the top seed in the Alabama Community College Conference Tournament, March 5-8, held at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville. Following a first-round bye, they will face the Chattahoochee Valley/Snead State winner at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 6.

“This honor really says a lot about our team,” said Mohun. “I am proud of what they have been able to accomplish this season. This comes as a result of their hard work and dedication.”

Under Mohun’s leadership, the Buccaneers have posted 20-win seasons for six consecutive years, and have claimed state and regional championships in 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2008. They also made National Tournament appearances in 2005 and 2008. During his career Mohun has also been named the Alabama Community College Conference Coach of the Year and the District 10 Coach of the Year for the National Junior College Athletic Association. Before arriving at Shelton, Mohun was the head coach at Prattville High School, leading the Lions to a 6A Final Four AHSAA finish in his final season. He has also served as head coach for Paxton High School in Florida, Saint James in Montgomery and T.R. Miller of Brewton.

Mohun is a native of Montgomery and a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Belhaven College and a master’s degree from The University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he served as a graduate assistant coach for the Indians. Mohun also serves as Shelton State’s Athletic Director.
