Quilt Exhibition Scheduled at Shelton State

2/4/2008

Tuscaloosa - A exhibition of quilts called, “Killing Time,” by Jan Holman, opens February 8, 2008 at the National Bank of Commerce Art Gallery on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College.

“Headlining” the exhibition is a recently completed work “Day of the Dead,” a whimsical Mexican theme quilt.

A reception honoring the artist and the opening of the exhibit will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday evening, February 8, in the Sandra Hall Ray Fine Arts Center. The opening of the exhibit coincides with Theatre Tuscaloosa’s opening night performance of “Dearly Departed” at 7:30 p.m. that evening.

Holman, an accomplished artist, brings a lifetime of experience to her craft.  She has studied around the world with many of the most respected fabric arts teachers in the US, Japan and Australia.

Originally from California, Holman began sewing as a teenager. After relocating to Alabama and marrying, she studied art at the University of Alabama but found her sewing skills grew as her family grew. Holman made most of her own clothes as well as those of her five children.

Gradually, her sewing passion turned to quilting.  To date, Holman has produced more than sixty quilts and received numerous awards and acclaim for her work.  She is a member of the West Alabama Quilter’s Guild and Birmingham Quilter’s Guild.

With an eye for unusual fabrics, Holman maintains an eclectic collection from around the globe including; India, Africa, China, Japan, Thailand, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and North & South America. “I call them my stash,” said Holman, with a twinkle of her eye.  “I never know when I’ll need just the right piece of cloth just an inch or so wide and a few inches long to add just the right detail to something I am making.”

Many of Holman’s quilts can be seen on the web at www.hank.smugmug.com.
