Shelton State Community College Recognizes Outstanding Students at Honors Convocation 2006

 

 

Tuscaloosa - Shelton State Community College recognized the successes and achievements of their students during the Honors Day 2006 Convocation held on April 30th in the Atrium of the Martin Campus. Hundreds of family and friends joined Shelton State faculty and staff to honor over 300 students.

Each honored student was presented with a medallion featuring the Shelton State seal.

 

The college awards, the most prestigious that the College bestows, included:

 

The Outstanding Technical Student Award is named for Mr. I. W. Mitchell who was president of Fredd State Technical College from 1976-1982. The recipient of the I. W. Mitchell Outstanding Technical Student Award is selected based on academic achievement, involvement in campus and community activities, technical recognition, and job related activities. The 2006 recipient of the I. W. Mitchell Award is Robin E. A. Petty.

 

The Special Achievement Award is named after Mr. Norman C. Cephus who was president of Fredd State Technical College from 1982-1990. The recipient of the Norman C. Cephus Special Achievement Award is selected based on academic achievement, involvement in campus and community activities, technical recognition, and job related activities. The 2006 recipient of the Norman C. Cephus Special Achievement Award is Clytee Lachelle Drake.

 

The Outstanding Freshman Award is named for Dr. Thomas E. Umphrey who was president of Shelton State Community College from 1988-2000. The recipient of the Thomas E. Umphrey Outstanding Freshman Award is selected based on outstanding academic achievement and involvement in campus activities.

Finalists for this prestigious award were Jami Gregg, Michael Wayne Johnson, Huong H. Lee, Laura Leigh Meherg and Andrew Smith. The recipient of the 2006 Thomas E. Umphrey Outstanding Freshman Award is Laura Leigh Meherg.

 

The Outstanding Technical Student Award is named for Mr. Harold I. James who was president of Shelton State Technical College from 1951-1976.The recipient of the Harold I. James Outstanding Technical Student Award is selected based on accomplishments in the classroom and workplace. Finalists for the award were

 Clytee Lachelle Drake, Joyce Ann Kiker, Sharon Ann Kirkman, Crystal Jean Layne, Elizabeth Truelove and Tina Louise Tucker.  The recipient of the 2006 Harold I. James Outstanding Technical Student Award is Elizabeth Truelove.

 

The Allen Award is named after U. S. Senator James B. Allen who served in Congress from 1969-1978. The recipient of the James B. Allen Award is selected based on academic achievement and service to the College and community. The 2006 recipient of the James B. Allen Award is Courtney Brooke Williamson.

 

The Outstanding Sophomore Student Award is named for Dr. Leo Sumner who was president of Shelton State Community College from 1976-1988. The recipient of the Leo Sumner Award is selected based on outstanding academic performance, school involvement, and community service. It is the highest honor that a student can earn at Shelton State Community College. The finalists for the college's most prestigious award were Alana Brooke Atchison, Bobby Dean Hembree, Jr., Jessica Lynne Murray, John Sturdivant, Elizabeth Truelove and Courtney Brooke Williamson. The 2006 recipient of the Leo Sumner Outstanding Sophomore Award is Jessica Lynne Murray.

 

Courtney Williamson and John Sturdivant were honored for their place on the All Alabama Academic Team.

Honored as Scholar Athletes were: Blake Harper - Baseball, Kiah Brown -

Basketball, Heather Allen - Soccer and Sarah Sutton - Softball.

 

Honored by the student newspaper, The Shelton State Courier, were: Matt

Celozzi, Courier Writer of the Year and Summer Day, Mass Communication

Student of the Year.

 

Members of the Shelton State Association of Nursing Students identified for

honors were: Aretha Mahan - President and SSANS Leadership Award, Nichole

Burns - Vice President and SSANS Fellowship Award, Elise Bobo - Secretary,

 Tiesha Lavender - Financial Secretary, Beth Laughlin - Treasurer and SSANS

Fellowship Award, Rachel Williams - Chaplain, Glorymar Dorta - First Year

Historian, Brandy Stines - Second Year Historian, Erin N. Giles - First Year

Reporter, Marsha Utley - Second Year Reporter and Ronica Watkins -

Parliamentarian.

 

The Shelton State chapter of Circle K, a collegiate service organization and

a part of Kiwanis International, honored with district awards were Laura

Meherg, John Sturdivant, club president Sierra Fladstol, vice president

Lauren Wheat and Sierra Fladstol and Lauren Wheat for 120-179 hours of

community service.

Performance as a Support Staff Member of Shelton State Community College was

presented to Polly Poovey; The Dr. and Mrs. John Todd Award for Outstanding

Performance as an Administrative Staff Member of Shelton State Community

College was presented to Karen van Luvender; The Dr. and Mrs. John Todd

Award for Outstanding Teaching in Technical Services was presented to
