The Department of Music at Shelton State Community College hosted the District V Solo and Ensemble Competition for Instrumentalists at the Martin Campus on April 23, 2005. Approximately 200 students, teachers and parents attended the annual event sponsored by the Alabama Music Educators Association.

Staff and faculty from Shelton State Community College participated in the "Walk America" fundraiser for the March of Dimes for the first time this year. The annual March of Dimes Walk was held on April 28 on the campus of the University of Alabama. Shelton State’s team, named the Baby Bucs, raised $1,143.40 for the charity. The Tuscaloosa area goal was $39,000 and the event raised $53,000.

Former Shelton State Community College student Quentin Andrew Davis has recently published his third book, Snuff Dipper’s Ball. The book was named a 2004 Book of the Year Award finalist by XLibris. His second and third novels, also autobiographical, are graphic tales about his time in the navy titled, Sailor's Waltz, and Dance of Darkness, about his return home and his struggle to find freedom from loving an abusive family and his struggle to keep his faith. Mr. Davis has contributed a copy of his book to the Brooks-Cork Library on Shelton State’s Martin Campus.
