SPRING CONCERT FEATURES COMPOSER ALAN BLACKSHEAR

Tuscaloosa – The Music Department of Shelton State Community College will present its spring program on Thursday, March 17 at 7:30 P.M. in the Bean-Brown Theatre on the Martin Campus at 9500 Old Greensboro Road in Tuscaloosa

As part of the 25th anniversary Silver Season, the Music Department is presenting “An Evening with Alan Blackshear: A Sampler of the Composer’s Works.” The concert will include arrangements of familiar tunes for brass ensemble and choir and original compositions for voice, choir, piano, and percussion.

Dr. Alan Blackshear has been on the faculty at Shelton for over 15 years as a teacher of Music Theory and Music Appreciation as well as directing the Jazz Ensemble and Brass Ensemble.  He holds both Masters and Doctoral degrees from the University of Alabama in Composition, and his first love is writing music.

The Shelton Brass Ensemble and the Shelton Singers will participate in the program, in addition to pianists Syble Coats and Susan Goode.  Dr. Mark Brown and his percussion students will be featured as well. Glinda Blackshear will sing a set of Chinese Love Songs which were written for her, accompanied by Syble Coats on piano and Leslie Welker on flute. Associate Dean Linda Grote will serve as emcee for the evening, with a guest appearance by Dr. Fred Goossen, retired Professor of Composition from the University of Alabama School of Music.

A reception honoring the composer will be held in the Wilson-Carr Rehearsal Hall following the performance.  For more information, call 205/391-2344.
