Howington Nominated for Awards

Tuscaloosa – Channing Howington, coordinator of basic mathematics developmental education at Shelton State Community College has been nominated for the “Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology” and the “Ernest L. Boyer International Award.”

Colleges are eligible to nominate one full-time teaching faculty member who has contributed in the most highly creative ways to teaching, learning and technology. The awards are presented at the annual conference sponsored by The Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.

Howington has also been nominated for a Chancellor’s Awards presented annually by the Alabama College Association at their annual meeting.

Channing Howington is one of the newest members of the mathematics department of Shelton State Community College, having been appointed full-time in 2003 after serving four years as a laboratory assistant and adjunct instructor. She earned a BS and MA degree from the University of Alabama and currently is enrolled in the doctoral program in higher education administration there.

Ms. Howington provided oversight when Shelton State served as a testing site for The Learning Equation, the software used initially in the basic developmental mathematics program.

Ms. Howington is a volunteer with the Tuscaloosa YMCA, the West Alabama Soccer Association, the Amateur Athletic Union, the March of Dimes, and the American Cancer Society. She is also an active member of the Junior League of Tuscaloosa. At Shelton State, Ms. Howington serves as the assistant coach for the Shelton State soccer team.

Dean of Instruction Camille Cochrane said, “Channing’s efforts have produced impressive positive results in our developmental mathematics students. We are delighted that her innovative approach to math education is receiving such broad recognition.”
