Tuscaloosa – Kevin P. Burns has joined the faculty of Shelton State Community College as a full-time instructor in psychology, effective with the spring 2005 semester.

Burns received his B.A. from the University of Missouri - St. Louis and a Masters degree in Psychology from Auburn University. For the past 19 years he has been employed by Indian Rivers Mental Health Center in Tuscaloosa in a variety of positions, beginning as an Outpatient Therapist and most recently as Juvenile Court Liaison and interim Coordinator of Outpatient Services for Children and Family Services. Prior to coming to Tuscaloosa, Burns was an Assistant Professor at Ball State University.

He has extensive experience with disaster relief operations, having been a disaster mental health specialist with the American Red Cross for the past 10 years. In that capacity, he has provided his services at disasters ranging from the Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City to the World Trade Center bombing in New York. Closer to home he has lent his expertise following the Sunset Limited train derailment in Mobile, the F-5 tornado in Birmingham and the Jim Walter Mine explosion in Brookwood. For his efforts, the Red Cross honored him as Alabama’s Disaster Volunteer of the Year in 2001-2002.

“We are delighted to have someone of Kevin’s background and commitment to his community join our full-time faculty,” said Dean of Instruction Camille Cochrane. “I know that his many talents and experiences will greatly enhance our student’s education in his classes.”
