Shelton State to Dedicate Soccer Field

Tuscaloosa – Shelton State Community College will dedicate its soccer field and name it for Dr. Arthur Howington at a ceremony on August 26 at 6:00 p.m.

The 6:00 p.m. ceremony will follow the Lady Buc’s opening soccer game against Hinds Community College at 4:00 p.m.

Dr. Arthur Howington, Dean of Academic Services at Shelton State from 1979 to his retirement in 2000, started the women’s soccer program in 1997. He had previously coached winning youth teams with both the YMCA and the West Alabama Soccer Association. He refereed soccer for many years, started the Tuscaloosa Stars (a youth soccer team for girls) and coached both the boys’ and girls’ teams at Holy Spirit Catholic High School. His 2005 Holy Spirit boys’ team won the Class IA-4A state championship.

“Arthur was a pioneer in 1997 as Shelton State was the only community college in Alabama with a women’s soccer program,” said school president Dr. Rick Rogers. “We are pleased to dedicate our soccer facility as ‘Howington Field’ in recognition of his commitment to this program.”
