Receiving an award in the Administrator category was Mr. Ronald Range, Director of Title III/Assistant Campus Director, C.A. Fredd Campus of Shelton State.

Under Mr. Range’s guidance of the Title III grant program, funding has increased from $500,000 annually to over $1,000,000 annually, thus allowing for significant enhancement of programs and facilities.  Mr. Range implemented renovation projects which enhanced facilities and brought within compliance of OSHA standards.

Mr. Range was instrumental in implementing increased and enhanced technology capabilities for classroom instruction and student services, which has led to the expansion and modernization of programs and curriculum.

In the Faculty Awards, Technical Division, Jason Moore was recognized.  Moore, an instructor in Machine Tool Technology, serves on the state-wide Curriculum Revision Committee for that area in 2003-2004.  Currently, he is a member of the Shelton State Community College Foundation Board and serves as the Shelton State Community College representative at the National Coalition for Advanced Technology Center Conference.  Prior to joining Shelton State, Moore was employed by the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education - Alabama Industrial Development Training.

An Academic Faculty award was presented to Channing Howington, one of the newest members of the mathematics department of Shelton State Community College.  She was appointed to a full-time faculty position in 2003 after serving four years as a laboratory assistant and adjunct instructor.  She earned a BS and MA degree from the University of Alabama and currently is enrolled in the doctoral program in higher education administration there.

Recognized in the “Staff” Category was Donna Ussery, secretary to the Dean of Technical Services.  A long-time member of the Shelton State staff, she began her career twenty years ago serving in the audio-visual department of the library and progressed to the position of secretary to the Director for Training in Business and Industry.  Because of her extensive knowledge of the inner workings of Shelton State, Donna is a much sought-after team member.  Her assignments include:  Tuscaloosa Area Wide College/Career Fair, Academic Scholarship Committee, Shelton State Honors Day Program, Master Calendar Committee, and the New Employee Selection Committee.

Participating in the conference as “Session Presenters” were Martha Key, Debbie Barton, Sharon Chastine and Lisa Waldrop from the Counseling Center.  Their presentation was entitled “Building Relationships with High School Counselors and Principals.”  The session focused on the role of high school counselors and principals in influencing a student’s perceptions and decisions about college selection.

Wynora Freeman from the English Department faculty, presented a session titled “George Bush, Colin Powell and Me: The Classroom Instructor as Leader” focusing on enhancing and utilizing innate leadership skills for transition for classroom to boardroom.

“Once again the outstanding employees of Shelton State have been recognized for their contributions not only to our school but to educational goals of the Alabama College System,” said Rick Rogers, President of Shelton State Community College.
