Abston Named Registrar at Shelton State Community College

Tuscaloosa – Dr. Rick Rogers, President of Shelton State Community College, has announced the appointment of Byron O. Abston as Assistant Dean of Student Services and Registrar.

Abston, who joined Shelton State in 2000 as Technology Specialist, has also served the school as a Mathematics Instructor, Faculty Assistant to the President, Director of Grant and Resource Development and most recently as Interim Registrar.

He holds a B.S. in Commerce and Business Administration and a M.A. in Secondary Mathematics from the University of Alabama.  He expects to complete his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at the University of Alabama in August 2006. He was selected to attend the Alabama Community College Leadership Academy; a year-long leadership training program designed to develop future leaders forcommunity colleges and is a graduate of Leadership Tuscaloosa class of 2004-2005.

“I’m delighted to be presented with this opportunity at a school I am totally committed to,” said Abston.  “I look forward to finding new ways that Shelton State can serve the needs of its students.”

The Assistant Dean of Student Services and Registrar is the chief administrative officer charged with interpreting and implementing policy from federal, state, and institutional sources as the policy applies to functions and tasks under his/her supervision. Functions include interpretation and implementation of policies that apply to: admissions, student educational records, placement testing, registration activities, degree/certificate awards, non-traditional and traditional credit evaluations, and grades and transcripts.

“Byron has demonstrated great skill and versatility in every position he has held at Shelton State,” said Dr. Rick Rogers.  “We all look forward to his leadership as Assistant Dean of Student Services and Registrar.”
