“Read to Your Children Day” Returns to Shelton State

TUSCALOOSA  - Shelton State Community College will host its second “Read to Your Children Day” on Friday, April 23, 2004 in the Unity Center on the Fredd Campus from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

“We have invited all of the kindergarten classes from Tuscaloosa City Schools.  The main purpose of the event is twofold – to encourage children to read, and to give the SSCC developmental students an opportunity to learn to read to children,” said Janice Filer coordinator of the event.

SSCC students who participate in the EDGE Learning Community will be the readers for the event as well as serving as activity leaders.  They will be reading four different stories then leading the children in a corresponding activity.

In addition to participants from Shelton State, the Children’s Hands On Museum, Kentuck, the Tuscaloosa Public Library and the Krackeroo Character Education program will provide activities during the one hour sessions.  Children will also have their pictures taken in character cutouts and Chef Neil Ravenna, head of the Shelton State Culinary Arts Program, will participate with a cooking session where the children will be making lunch/snacks. At the end of their visit, students will be given a “goody bag” containing books, pencils, and other treats.

“This is the second time we have sponsored this event.  It is our hope that we can have a “Read to Your Children Day” every fall and spring semester,” said Filer.
