Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu to Speak at The Unity Center

Tuscaloosa - Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, a renowned author and educator, will visit The Unity Center on the Fredd Campus of Shelton State Community College on Saturday, September 25. Kunjufu will be the keynote speaker at the first annual Parent’s Education Conference sponsored by West Tuscaloosa Cluster Schools in partnership with Shelton State Community College.

As president of African American Images, a communications company based in Chicago, IL, Kunjufu is constantly on the lecture circuit conducting over thirty different workshops, addressing students, parents, teachers, community residents and churches. He is the author of numerous books and has appeared at Tuskegee University, Notre Dame, Stanford, Howard, University of Michigan, and Temple University among others.

His numerous books include best-seller Countering the Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys (Volumes 1-4), Developing Positive Self-Images and Discipline in Black Children, Motivating and Preparing Black Youth for Success, Critical Issues in Educating African American Youth, Black Economics: Solutions for Community and Economic Empowerment, Hip Hop vs. Maat: A Psyco Social Analysis of Values, as well as Kunjufu's book of fiction, Good Brothers Looking for Good Sisters. His latest book is Great Negroes Past and Present Volume II. He is also the co-author of SETCLAE, an Africentric, and multicultural curriculum.

Kunjufu has been a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Tony Brown's Journal, The Sally Jesse Raphael Show and BET, and he has had numerous articles written about his work appearing in Essence, Ebony and Emerge Magazine. He is a former visiting professor at the United Theological Seminary-Doctoral Division and Executive Director of African American Images Talent Center, designed to identify and develop our children's talents and motivate them to start their own businesses. Kunjufu is Executive Producer of a full feature movie entitled Up Against the Wall, starring Marla Gibbs. The movie, now available on video cassette, is about Black family values. He is also an Educational Consultant to Sesame Street and BET's Teen Summit.

The Parent’s Education Conference begins at 8:30 A.M. and runs to 4:00 P.M. in The Unity Center located on the Fredd Campus of Shelton State Community College at 3401 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Tuscaloosa. The conference was created to boost academic achievement by building parent and community partnerships.
