Surf the Net at Shelton State’s CY-BUCS Beginning March 15

After months of anticipation, Shelton State Community College will open its Cy-Bucs computer café on March 15.

With 12 computer workstations and a laser printer, all in a relaxed café setting with tables and booths, Cy-Bucs provides information services in a casual environment. Shelton State’s new wireless network will make connecting to the internet easy for students and faculty who have their own laptop computers and appropriate network cards and for those who wish to use college PCs.

In addition to computer access, food and beverages are available and encouraged in Cy-Bucs. Chef Neil Ravenna of the college's culinary arts program is developing a menu of light snacks and specialty coffees and beverages that will be for sale in Cy-Bucs.

Debbie Grimes, Director of Library Services at Shelton State said, “The mission of Cy-Bucs is to extend selected information services in a relaxed, user-friendly environment. It is a service-oriented facility where students and faculty can relax, eat or drink, and use information technology for instructional purposes.”

Cy-Bucs was named by student John Abernathy, who entered a contest held by the Shelton State in fall 2003. Other student and faculty input came through the design of the Cy-Bucs logo by Paul Sellers of the MIS Department, and an aluminum sign created by instructor Ronnie Guy and Josh Wilkins and Jamie Lindsey, students in the Machine Shop classes.

Prior to the grand opening on March 15, a special faculty/staff preview is planned for Friday, March 12 from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M.

Cy-Bucs is located in Room 2413 on the Martin Campus and is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. and on Fridays from 7:30 A.M. to Noon.
