SHELTON STATE MUSIC DEPARTMENT PRESENTS “ALL-AMERICAN” CONCERT

The Music Department of Shelton State Community College will present a spring concert of all-American music on Thursday, March 18 at 7:30 P.M. in the Bean-Brown Theatre of the Sandra Hall Ray Fine Arts Center.

Featuring the Shelton Singers and the Shelton State Jazz Ensemble, the concert will consist of music by American composers and arrangers, many of whom are from Alabama.

The 40-voice Shelton Singers, under the direction of Glinda Blackshear with assistance from Dr. Mark Brown, will perform selections by Alabama composers Milburn Price, K. Lee Scott, Rosephanye Powell and Alan Blackshear. Additionally, works by Daniel Gawthrop, Michael Jothen, Randall Thompson and Aaron Copeland will be performed. Soloists for the Shelton Singers are Katie Lewis and Josh Noland. Susan Goode serves as the group’s accompanist.

Directed by Dr. Alan Blackshear, the Shelton State Jazz Ensemble is a multi-generational group composed of 24 members who perform primarily in a “big band” style with some Latin and fusion influences. Selections in the March 18 performance include works by George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Chuck Mangione and Frank Mantooth. Some arrangements will reflect various American locations, such as Moonlight in Vermont, Back Home in Indiana and, of course, Stars Fell on Alabama. Soloists with the band are students April Rigsby and Michael Simmons.

Alan Blackshear said, “Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the many unique contributions of American composers.”

The 7:30 P.M. performance is free and open to the public.
