Shelton State Honor Society Receives Regional Awards

The Shelton State Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa received eight awards at the national organization’s regional convention in Birmingham February 18 and 19.

Shelton State’s Alpha Epsilon Iota chapter competed for “Hallmark Awards” by submitting essays, photos, news articles and recommendation letters showcasing their activities in leadership, scholarship, fellowship and service. Nora Lee and Jan Dean serve as the chapter advisors at Shelton State Community College.

Awards presented were the Scholarship Hallmark Award submitted by Jessica Christian, Vice President Scholarship Team Leader; second runner up for the Service Hallmark Award submitted by Dustin Ball, Service Team Leader; the Order of the Golden Key Award submitted by Steve Johnson, President Leadership Team Leader; and chapter awards including the Pinnacle Silver Award Scholarship, the Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Alabama Region; Five-Star Chapter Award; Milestone Award and first runner-up for the Horizon Award to chapter advisor Nora Lee.

The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunities for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.

The Alpha Epsilon Iota chapter will also represent Shelton State at the International Honors Institute in Minneapolis March 31-April 1.
