Howington Nominated for Awards

(Tuscaloosa) – Channing Howington, math instructor at Shelton State Community College, has been nominated for the “Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology” and the “Ernest L. Boyer International Award.”

Colleges are eligible to nominate one full-time teaching faculty member who has contributed in the most highly creative ways to teaching, learning and technology. The awards are presented at the annual conference sponsored by The Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.

Howington was also nominated for the Most Outstanding Academic Faculty Member for the Chancellor’s Awards, which are presented by the Alabama College Association at their annual meeting.

Channing Howington is one of the newest members of the mathematics department of Shelton State Community College, having been hired as a full-time faculty member in 2003 after serving four years as a laboratory assistant and adjunct instructor. She earned BS and MA degrees from the University of Alabama and currently is enrolled in the doctoral program in higher education administration there.

Howington is an active member of the Junior League of Tuscaloosa. At Shelton State, Ms. Howington serves as the assistant coach for the Shelton State soccer team.

Dean of Instruction Camille Cochrane said, “Channing’s efforts have produced impressive positive results in our developmental mathematics students. We are delighted that her innovative approach to math education is receiving such broad recognition.”
