HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS AT SHELTON STATE

(Tuscaloosa) – Shelton State Community College located at 9500 Old Greensboro Road in Tuscaloosa salutes the holiday season with a series of events beginning on Monday, December 8.

The Shelton Singers, under the direction of Glinda Blackshear, will combine with the Jazz Ensemble and Brass Ensemble, directed by Dr. Alan Blackshear, for a concert of sacred and secular Christmas music. The free concert will be presented in the atrium of the college at 7:30 P.M. The concert will include sacred music from England, France and America, as well as secular favorites such as "Jingle Bells", "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Grown Up Christmas List". Dr. Mark Brown is the assistant director of the Shelton Singers and Susan Goode is the accompanist for the group.

The program will also be presented on Tuesday, December 9 at 1:00 P.M. as part of the Shelton State Music Department’s “Terrific Tuesday” Concert Series. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

Theatre Tuscaloosa joins in the celebration with their production of “A Christmas Story” opening on December 11 with performances running through December 21 in the Bean-Brown Theatre in the Sandra Hall Ray Fine Arts Center.

“A Christmas Story” follows the quest of Ralphie Parker to get a genuine Red Rider BB Gun for Christmas. Pleading his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself, the consistent response is “You’ll shoot your eye out.” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the temperamental exploding furnace, the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin, Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and the famous “Leg Lamp.”

For “A Christmas Story” ticket information, call the Theatre Tuscaloosa box office at 205-391-2277.

Throughout the holiday season, Shelton State’s Jubilee Clock Tower carillon will play seasonal favorites. Dedicated in April 2003, the carillon features twenty-four cast bronze bells and was designed by the Van Bergen Company, a leader in the carillon industry since 1795.

For additional information on any of Shelton State Community College’s holiday events please call Wendy Jones, Director of Public Relations and Alumni Affairs, at 20-5-391-2310.
