Shelton Singers to Present Schubert “Mass in G”

Tuscaloosa - The Shelton Singers of Shelton State Community College will present their annual sacred music concert on Sunday, October 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church located at 113 Hargrove Road in Tuscaloosa.

Featured on the program is the “Mass in G” by Franz Schubert. The choir and chamber orchestra will be under the direction of Dr. Mark Brown. Soloists include Micklynn Kannapel, Amy Todhunter, Marlin Ward, Katelyn Perkins, Elliott Simpson, and Jared Sanders.

“We have chosen the Schubert Mass in G because it is one of the classic choral/orchestral compositions of the Romantic Period that has been very popular since it was written in 1815,” said Dr. Brown. “The majority of our students have never had the opportunity to sing a composition like this before. Adding the orchestra to the concert will prove to be a once in a lifetime experience for many of our students.”

Ms. Glinda Blackshear, director of the Shelton Singers, will conduct the group in five anthems: a setting of “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl, a setting of “To Everything There is a Season” by Rene Clausen, a Gospel number called “Goin’ to the Holy City” by Joseph M. Martin, “Jubilate Deo” by Laura Farnell and “A Distant Land” by John Rutter, which will be dedicated to all those whose lives have been affected by war.

The concert is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact Glinda Blackshear at 205-391-2344.
