Alicedale Sheldon was the daughter of Thomas Sheldon and Elizabeth Margaretha Sheldon nee de Vaal.

"STEWART, Mrs. ALICEDALE, born Sheldon, wife of Dr. Robert Alexander Stewart, M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O., Cape Town, who was medical officer to the Imperial Forces in the Transvaal and the Free State during the Anglo-Boer War, after which he started his practice in Cape Town. One son, Lawrence Robert (Larry) who, after leaving the Boys' High School, Sea Point, C.P., attended the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, was subsequently posted to the Heavy Bombing Squadron, R.A F, Worthydown, near Winchester; in 1936 was selected to give bombing exhibitions before 50,000 spectators at Hendon, England. Keenly interested in all branches of sport, is fond of music and has for many years made the Cape Town City Hall concerts one of her chief recreations, others being reading, needlework and motoring. Alicedale was mentioned in the Will of her aunt's, Annie, husband, J. Brown Lawrence, where she was bequeathed: "all the table silver and silver plate in my house at Rondebosch together with the dining room chairs and all the pictures in the drawing room including any plaques on the walls of the dining room."

However, its not clear if she received any of this as her father, Thomas Sheldon jnr., started court proceedings against "the Estate of the late Brown Lawrence, the Cape Hospital Board and Cape Provincial Administration". Thomas was suing over a single line in Lawrence's Will: "All the other movable property shall be sold by auction and the proceeds shall be equally divided between the following persons namely: Alicedale Stewart, Sarah Wiley, James Lawrence, Thomas Sheldon, Ellen Parker." Earlier in Lawrence's Will he had set aside some money to set up a fund at the Cape Hospital; Thomas believed that these two actions - the fund and the auctioning of the movable property - contradicted each other, and that he should be entitled to a share of the fund money.

The final judgement in the case was in favour of Thomas Sheldon; he and Ellen, sister of Thomas and Annie, were to receive £200 per annum for the rest of their lives, while Alicedale received £600 per annum for the rest of her life. (Source: KAB CSC 2/1/1/980 Ref: 1085, Cape Town Archives)

Alicedale was in a court case vs. the Master of the Supreme Court in 1925, along with her aunt, Ellen Parker nee Sheldon, and Sarah Wiley. (Source: National Archives of South Africa)
