Shaylynn Allen is an autistic professional sculptor with a background in engineering. She takes inspirations from the fragmentation of her own thoughts, attempting to formalize the various internal and external tensions and juxtapositions in her life through her work. One of Allen’s most recent works is a public art piece, Border Line, which addresses the tension of a home within the natural context of the yard in which it was built. Allen has shown in Woodbury Art Museum’s Art of Our Century (Orem, UT), The Drawing Board (Corvallis, OR), and has had several group and solo exhibitions at Oregon State University; including her most recent solo exhibition The Button Show. Her video installation piece Perspectives has been featured in the third volume of Midnight Muse magazine. Allen is also the personal photographer of the Eugene-based bluegrass band Dirty Rotten Snake in the Grass. She is on track to graduate this spring with a B.A. in Art from Oregon State University.

Artistic Philosophy:
Because of my autism I experience the world as a series of moments, unrelated fragments of memory. As I recall these experiences they become acutely juxtaposed with my present causing my mind to experience the visual and emotional tensions between the two. I attempt to bring out these qualities of my experience in my work, inviting the viewer to reevaluate their relationship with the subject matter of the piece they are experiencing. To help engage my viewers I focus incorporating my themes of juxtaposition and fragmentation at the more subtle levels of the work, often the material or technique choices, while simultaneously addressing the subject of the piece itself.
Every piece of art I create had an intention driving it in addition to my themes. Should that part of my concept interest you, I happily invite you to visit my portfolio.
General Philosophy:
Every piece of art I create matters, every step I take when creating it matters, and I do not see any bit of work of mine is not done until it is ready for display. Intention, care, and attention are my three drives when I'm creating. Starting from a concept or inspirational object, I work in my themes, and create in a respectful and thoughtful manner.
