2016 Recipient

The 2016 Shasta Piping Society Pipe Scholarship has been awarded to the student music program of the Vieira Brum's Piper of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Vieira Brum's Piper is a program that teaches music to children in some of the most challenged neighborhoods of Rio. The program uses an unconventional pipe band model and incorporates other musical styles to attract student from diverse backgrounds. More than 200 students since 2004 have been through the ranks of training that focus on musicianship, camaraderie, and discipline.

The Vieira Brum's Piper has been awarded a refurbished set of Great Highland Bagpipes made of African Blackwood by Gillanders and McLeod. Included in the award were chanter and drone reeds, bag, covers, cords, and a blackwood Dunbar chanter provided by the Shasta Piping Society.

Real hemp and cobbler's and beeswax was provided by Piper's Supply, and copies of the National Piping Centre's Tutor Book 1 and Tidswell's Reed Book were included to help provide basic training to this organization in need. We hope this award helps the student music program achieve their goals for the community.
