Computer technology has forever altered the way businesses operate and water and wastewater utilities are no exception. Operations, engineering, finance, customer service nearly all utility jobs have been transformed in the last three decades. One of the most dramatic examples of this is the way many utilities are converting paper maps to electronic formats for use in geographic information systems, or GIS. Approximately 80 percent of all utility asset information is geographically referenced. A GIS allows utility operators and managers to determine where their assets are located for example, valves, water mains, hydrants, meters, manholes, catch basins, outfalls, etc. A GIS also lets users update, analyze, and display information about those assets. As a result, a GIS can reveal important information that leads to better decision making. For example, GIS can be used to determine which valves should be closed to isolate a broken water main for repair just by clicking on that pipe in a laptop computer in a utility truck. The main purpose of this course is to teach the meaning and power of GIS applications for water and wastewater systems..
