Abstract:
In this paper an iterative sequential approach for optimizing airport arrival, departure and aircraft taxi modules is proposed. The central idea is to connect the inputs and outputs of these main modules or subsystems that conform the overall airport process. The process begins when the inbound and outbound traffic are assigned a position in the queues. Departure and arrival modules must order these queues, minimizing completion or delay times. Between these modules the taxi planning module is placed, which must determine the best route for each aircraft from landing runways to gates, or from gates to takeoff runways, such that conflicts are minimized.
The applied methodology is based on mathematical programing: Arrival Module (AM) and Departure Module (DM) are based on Job shop scheduling formulation and Taxi Planning (TP) on multi-commodity flow network formulation. This sequential approach is tested for two fictitious airports. Its performance is compared against a First Come First Served (FCFS) strategy, which is usually applied in real life. Computational results indicate that average delay per passenger may be reduced when applying the proposed approach. The work developed here is a first step to an overall integrated approach.
