Abstract: In this talk we will introduce a physics-oriented view of entropy (mainly from statistical mechanics) and we will relate it both to Shannon entropy and Kolmogorov complexity. Furthermore we will look into the properties that any entropy/complexity metric must meet to be considered valid. We will further relate these properties to the sparsity of a given signal. We will then examine different (already proposed by various authors) sparsity and complexity metrics to see whether they pass or fail. From there, we will develop new metrics both for sparsity and complexity. We will put these new metrics to test with actual experimental data. These have been obtained from a measuring apparatus developed by the authors in order to analyze gait in walking and running subjects. Finally we will present some conclusions and point to future developments on the theory and the application sides.
