Brigade Commander

c/Col Manikandan, Rithvik

Scripps Ranch High School


As the Brigade Commander, c/Col Manikandan, Rithvik spearheads the Brigade Staff of 10 in all operations and event planning. He is the primary leader responsible for successfully administering & overseeing brigade-wide drill & academic competitions, formal ceremonies, cadet recreational activities, and various volunteer events. Manikandan previously served as the Echo Flight Commander in his unit and will also be dually serving as the Group First Sergeant for the 24-25 Academic Year. In JROTC, he has dedicated himself to Saber Fancy Drill Team, CyberPatriot, Awareness Presentation Team, and Flag Detail Fancy Drill Team. He is also a part of Kitty Hawk Tutoring, helping other students in their AP subjects and SAT preparation, and a Public Affairs representative, working in. Recently, Manikandan competed at the CyberPatriot XVI Nationals, winning 2nd place in the Cisco Category and overall All-Service Division. He also competed and placed 1st in the Saber Regulation, Saber Exhibition, and Saber Sweepstakes Category at Golden Bear Drill Nationals 2024.As he goes into the next year, Manikandan hopes to introduce novel & creative ideas to brigade events and foster camaraderie and excitement that draws in cadets. His biggest aim is to expose incoming First-Year Cadets to the different opportunities in RO and instill in them the same values he holds dear: resilience and compassion. Apart from JROTC, Manikandan is a tentative National Merit Scholar and an SAT Tutor for Schoolhouse.world, where he teaches various SAT Math topics to students all over the country. He is also passionate about Computer Science and Cybersecurity, and is a Cisco Coach for Marshall Middle School’s CyberPatriot Team. In his free time, Manikandan likes watching movies & k-dramas, or going out with friends. After high school, he hopes to double major in Business and Computer Science and hopefully work on his own startup through college.

SEA: Senior Enlisted 

c/Sgt Maj Duque, Romeo

Morse High School

As the Senior Enlisted Advisor, c/CSM Duque, Romeo’s responsibilities are to advise and aid the Brigade Commander with their vision for the Brigade. He is responsible for the morale and development of the SNCOs of the Brigade. While also leading the Drill and Ceremony of the Brigade and commanding the Honor Guard for Cadet Ball. At Morse High School, he was Foxtrot Company First Sergeant, Bravo Company First Sergeant, Delta Company Commander, JLAB Commander, Drum Corps Varsity XO. Duque will additionally serve as next year’s Battalion DCO, Drum Corps Commander, Platoon Regulation Commander for his unit. Outside of JROTC, he is the Current Red Cross Club President. Red Cross being a community orientated club, mainly focused on giving back to the Morse and San Diego communities by hosting on campus Blood Drives, First Aid Training, and CPR Training with Duque being CPR certified himself. He is also a member of Morse's Model United Nations (MUN) Club. In MUN student-delegates meet up once a year and represent a country with certain resolutions that the real UN has, helping develop communication, networking, public speaking, diplomacy, and pragmatism with student-delegates across San Diego and competes on the Morse Golf Team. Along with his extracurriculars, he has competed in Academic Bowl (4th place), BDP, and BDS (2nd place).  For the upcoming school year he wishes to achieve effective communication between Brigade and Unit Staff with a personal goal of motivating, inspiring, and uplifting the Corps of cadets in both the Battalion and Brigade level. He has been awarded the 2021 December Cadet of the Month, 2021-2022 Cadet of the Year, and Outstanding Cadet 2nd Year Brigade Medal. In his free time, Duque plays the lead guitar with my band that I co-founded. His plans after high school are to attend the United States Naval Academy, majoring in Biochemistry, commissioning as an officer in the Navy, and becoming a pediatrician.

XO: Executive Officer

c/LTC Nguyen, "Yumi" Thanh

Kearny High School

For this upcoming year, c/LTC Nguyen, "Yumi" Thanh will be the Brigade Executive Officer, she is the second-in-command, and her responsibilities are along the line of staying organized, communicating effectively, most importantly, leading her team with confidence to manage our brigade staff departments and ensuring the success of all brigade events throughout the year. This year and upcoming year she will be the Battalion Commander of Komet 4th battalion. For the past years,  She have competed in many teams such as Exhibition Armed Drill, Color Guard, and Raider (YPF) along with commanding Regulation and Leadership teams. Her goal for this upcoming year is to promote the JROTC program to the community especially to maintain effective communication between the brigade and other units. She has trained badminton and plays competitively,  being on Varsity teams for the past 3 years of high school. Recently, she has won the CIF league 1st place single, 2nd place double along with CIF individuals 3rd place double. Along with being apart of the student council in her school. I have worked with many schools such as Montgomery Middle School, Taft Middle School, Angier Middle School, and more to promote the program and guide the incoming students. In her free time, she loves to hang out with her friends or simply just resting at home with her cat. After high school, she plan to attend 4 years of university pursue a career in Business along with doing ROTC, and then fulfill 20 years of military service.

J-1: Personnel Officer

c/LTC Villarruel, Analicia

Hoover High School

In her position c/LTC Villarruel, Analicia is in charge of the Academic League competitions as well as heading many Brigade ceremonies and delivering many of the speeches. In addition to her responsibility of working with Brigade Cadre to keep track of the scores during competitions. Her previous JROTC positions at Hoover High School were Delta Company CO, S8 NCO, S5, and S8. In addition to her leadership positions she has completed in ADT, Academics, JLAB, CG, and S&P. Her goal for the upcoming year is to enlist in the Military. For extracurriculars, She plays Volleyball and works at the Pink Rose Cafe. Along with being involved in her school community, working closely alongside academy teachers, helping set up fundraisers, and more. In her free time, she usually works, or paints and reads. Her plans after High School is to join the Army.

J-2: Intelligence Officer

c/LTC LaBarge, Devin

San Diego High School

As the J-2 Intelligence officer LaBarge, Devin works to assess risk factors in brigade events by creating and distributing risk assessments to all units. He works to ensure smooth flow in all brigade events by providing counter measures to any safety concerns. LaBarge also works to find, research, and distribute information on scholarships to the San Diego Unified Joint Brigade. LaBarge has held the position of S-4 (Logistics Officer) at San Diego High School. He has also been on many teams, including Color Guard, Honor Guard, Captain of the Leadership JLAB team, Archery, earning expert shooter, Best Drilled Squad, Best Drilled Platoon, Varsity Color Guard, YPF, and captain of the Armed Drill Team. His goals for this year are to increase efficiency by ensuring all units and cadets are aware of any safety concerns. Outside of JROTC, LaBarge is his school band, where he has played for 6 years, earning his place as 1st chair in his band. Among his many hobbies, his favorite involve cars. He enjoys car shows or museums, drawing cars, working on cars, and designing them. Other hobbies include 3d modelling, clay design, drawing, 3d printing, and learning new skills. My plan after high school is to attend a college to learn transportation design, and start a career designing cars. 

J-3: Operations Officer

c/LTC Seddo, Allyson

Crawford High School

As the J3 c/LTC Seddo, Allysonis responsible for operational standards during Brigade events and devising their development. She is responsible for the completion of every OPORD for all SDUSD schools to analyze, which would be event details and their sequences. She reviews the previous years’ After Action Reports (AARs) with the goal to continuously improve and enhance the cadet experience, including that of the Joint Brigade Staff. Seddo’s previous positions in her unit are platoon sergeant, platoon leader, S2 assistant, and S5. Allyson has competed in archery, Best Drilled squad and platoon, and Academic League. Her goals this year are to ensure that our brigade improves from the last few years, earn scholarships, and take as many volunteer/leadership opportunities as I can. Cadet Seddo is on the  Crawford dance team as well as the vice president and in our AVID class. Seddo accepts any volunteer work offered (If able). Seddo placed 2nd in archery in our brigade and was offered a sponsorship from an essay contest. In her free time she listens to music, plays games, watches shows, or goes out with friends. After high school she plans on attending a 4 year university, more specifically majoring in criminology at UC Irvine and becoming an FBI agent after receiving a bachelor's degree.

J-4: Logistics Officer

 c/LTC Vazquez, Miguel

Madison High School

As the Brigade J4 Logistics Officer, c/LTC Vazquez, Miguel is in charge of all uniform items and equipment that the brigade handles. He distributes brigade awards, sets up drill pads, and ensures all units have the necessary uniform items. At Madison High School, Vazquez has served as his Battalion’s S1 (Personal Officer), Senior Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (SNOIC), and Battalion Commander. In JROTC, he has dedicated himself to various teams such as Best Drilled Squad, Junior Leadership Academic Bowl (JLAB), Color Guard, and Best Drilled Individual. His goal for the 24-25 school year is to make sure every unit has the necessary equipment and earn his Expert Shooter Badge in Archery. Outside of JROTC, he is an active member at his church and is a Seventh-Day Adventist Pathfinder, which is similar to Boy Scouts and he has earned 40+ Honor Badges. At Madison, he is on the Varsity Football and Tennis team. In his free time, he enjoys doing anything that involves being outdoors. After high school, Vazquez hopes to attend a 4-year college while being in ROTC while studying, to then join the U.S. Army as an Officer. 

J-5: Public Affairs Officer

c/CDR Baker, Isabel 

Point Loma High School

It is c/CDR Baker’s responsibility to maintain the online presence of the SDUSD brigade. In her unit she has held the positions of N-4 Supply & N-5 PAO assistant, Platoon leader, Color Guard & Honor Guard Commander, and Public Affairs Officer. She has participated in the armed and unarmed drill team, colorguard, drone, orienteering, academics, and field meet athletics. Baker’s goals this year include expanding the online presence and improving camaraderie within the brigade. Cadet Baker works with various organizations for military children building social skills; as well as foster kids who have been failed by the foster care system. Baker’s accomplishments include receiving the military order of the purple heart award for leadership excellence as well as superior cadet. As well as being certified in CPR, First Aid, as a TRUST certified drone pilot, and a mandated reporter for the state of california. In her free time she enjoys going to concerts, the beach, In & Out, and the occasional hike. After high school Baker will attend 4 year college as a Marine Corps Reservist in order to commission through PLC.

J-6: Comms Cyber Officer

c/CDR Danh, Thuy Tien

Patrick Henry High School

As the J-6, c/CDR Danh, Thuy Tien is responsible for maintaining the Joint Brigade’s technical platforms, data, and documents, helping the Brigade run smoothly. Before joining Brigade, she was a part of Patrick Henry's leadership as the Public Affairs Officer (N5), Fundraising Chief, Admin Chief and Squad Leader. In addition to being a part of her program’s Navy League Academic Team. Some of her achievements include being awarded Cadet of the Month for March 2024 and Exemplary Conduct. Her goal for the upcoming year is to create a supportive environment for cadets to grow into their own as leaders. Outside of JROTC, she is part of her school’s Link Crew Program, helping new students adjust to high school, and the First Gen Scholars Program that assists students to reach their potential and pursue higher education. She is active in her school's community currently working as an ambassador in Link Crew, working with her school to create a more supportive space for upcoming freshman, and the Vice President of the Cultural Exchange Club at her school. In her free time, she likes to crochet and watch movies, especially animation. After High School, She plans on attending a 4 year university with a degree in Marketing or Data Science. 

J-8: Finance Officer

c/Lt Col Nandakumar, Laksita

Mira Mesa High School

As the Brigade J8 Finance Officer, c/Lt Col Laksita Nandakumar expertly manages budgets and fundraisers, ensuring cadets have access to engaging activities throughout the school year. Demonstrating her strong organizational and financial management skills, Laksita also serves as the Executive Officer for her unit, president of the Engineering & Robotics team, and class council secretary at Mira Mesa High School. Next year, she aims to take more time for herself to decompress, enjoy her senior year to the fullest, and spend more time with friends and family while actively completing her necessary tasks. Her athletic discipline as the Varsity Waterpolo goalie, along with her role managing the boys' water polo and swim teams at MMHS, further highlights her leadership and team management abilities. An avid bharatnatyam dancer since the age of 7, Laksita is preparing for her graduation ceremony this summer, showcasing her dedication and perseverance. She has aspirations of studying structural engineering with a specialization in Aerospace and becoming an Air Force officer.

LNO: Liaison Officer

c/Lt Col Anthony, Sean

Scripps Ranch High School

As the LNO, c/Lt. Col Anthony is in charge of internal events, including finding judges for competitions, communicating with unit commanders and cadre, alumni networking, as well as external events like presentations for sponsors and semester reviews. Cadet Anthony has previously been in charge of the weekly Physical Training Regimens and the Youth Physical Fitness Teams for his unit. As well as assuming the job responsibilities of other cadets when one is sick or absent such as Flight CO and NCO. Anthony has been on his schools Saber and Armed Teams and has competed as a primary member for both and has served as a team captain for his units Male YPF team two years running. Anthony's goals this year are to ensure that all events this year run smoothly, that we don’t have any issues with scoring, judges, and that everyone has a good time and hopes to grow as a leader and experience a high responsibility job. Anthony has been a Summer Counselor at Outpost Summer Camp working with all ages from Grade 5 and younger to Grade 8. Along with playing the drums and karate as hobbies. Anthony's accomplishments include passing entry exams for Flight Academy Scholarship and going to attend Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Oklahoma, and being Student of the Month, Cadet of the Month, and Cadet Standout. In his free time he usually is exercising or gaming. He is still deciding his plans are for after high school.
