Down & Dirty

DAY 1 – Watch an episode or episodes (about one hour total) of a show about Earth, the weather, geology, volcanoes, or oceanography. Some Options: https://www.pbs.org/video/science-trek-volcanoes/ (28 minutes), Bill Nye https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xt-tjH2P2-k (29 minutes) or shows found on PBS ("NOVA"), Discovery Channel, Science Channel, National Geographic Channel, TED Talks (online videos), and the History Channel.

Make a list of 2 questions or topics from watching or reading to share with your NOVA counselor.

DAY 2 - Make a fossil Cast at home. This website has easy to follow instructions on how to do this at home: https://www.homegrownfun.com/how-to-make-homemade-fossils-classroom/

DAY 3 – Build or draw a volcano model. If you build a working model, make sure you follow all safety precautions including wearing protective glasses for your volcano’s eruption. If you draw a volcano, be sure to draw a cross section and explain the characteristics of different types of volcanoes.

DAY 4 – Share the volcano model you have drawn or built with your counselor and what you have learned.

DAY 5 –Explore a career associated with earth science. Find out what subjects you would need to study as you get older.

DAY 6 – What kind of education would you need in the future to help explore Earth? What types of people other than geologists explore Earth?

DAY 7 – Discuss with your counselor what is needed to have a career in earth science.

Please DON'T feel like you MUST do all of these in order, or on these exact days, or do them at all! I just wanted to give this out as a option for those who might want to give it a go!
