What are OST (Ohio State Tests) EOCs (End of Course)?
State achievement tests tell how well students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards. These tests help guide and strengthen future teaching so that all students are prepared for long-term success in school, college, careers and life. Test results allow citizens to know how their local schools are performing compared to others around the state.
Why do you have to take EOCs?
State and federal laws (IDEA 1997) require that all students participate in statewide academic testing. The high school end of course tests align to required high school courses, and include Algebra I & Geometry or Math I & Math II for mathematics, ELA II for English language arts, Biology for science, and American History and American Government for social studies. Ohio graduation requirements also incorporate the end of course tests as a way to meet competency in ELA and mathematics. Students must take these assessments twice and attempt to get the required competency score of 684 or higher before they can use alternate competencies (such as career technical pathway options).
Students enrolled in American History or American Government at the Scioto County CTC will be scheduled to take end-of-course (EOC) exams at the conclusion of the semester. Students will be informed of the testing dates by their academic instructors.
Some home schools also request that students retest in deficient areas from 9th, 10th, and possibly 11th grade coursework. These assessments include: ELA II, Algebra I, Geometry, Math I, Math II, Biology, American History, and American Government. Counselors send lists to Mrs. Franke, and students are tested at the CTC during both fall and spring testing windows.
