Two exciting Arts focused competitions for talented high school students


THE LINKS, INCORPORATED YOUNG MASTER WRITERS PROGRAM (YMWP) COMPETITION was developed to encourage creative writing excellence among high school students. The competition is open to high school creative writers of poetry and prose. It was developed in recognition of the vital role of writing in our society in an era of shorthand communications facilitated by social media. The YMWP encourages student participation, pride and achievement in creative writing. It is designed to enhance, promote, share and display student creative writing talents in published volumes. Through this program, our international organization has edited four volumes containing poetry and prose culled from nearly 1,000 student submissions. Ninety-nine students are now published authors, including several Morris County students! We look forward to expanding and enhancing our partnerships with schools, libraries, and other non-profit and community organizations through our Young Master Writers Program. Students may submit original and previously unpublished poetry and prose on subjects of their choosing. ENTRY DEADLINE IS MARCH 1, 2022.


THE LINKS, INCORPORATED EASTERN AREA YOUNG MASTERS 2.0 PROGRAM (YM 2.0) COMPETITION. Our quest to showcase even more high school students possessing extraordinary talents is expanded through the YM 2.0 program. This offering widens our talent search to showcase high school students through poetry and prose, dance, music, and drama. These performances are guided by a response to specific prompts. ENTRY DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 5, 2022.

#1 – Little Miss African American Scholarship Pageant: Founded in 1993 by Lisa Ruffin, this proram is based on the idea that young people must begin with a strong foundation. #3 – Beyonce’s Homecoming Scholars Award Program: Beyoncé, through her BeyGOOD initiative, has established the Homecoming Scholars Award Program for students attending Xavier University, Wilberforce University, Tuskegee University and Bethune-Cookman University – all Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). #4 – National Hook-up of Black Women Scholarships: National Hook-up of Black Women (NHBW) Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors who plan to enroll in an accredited college or university in the fall after graduation. #5 – The Bill Gates Scholarship For Minorities: a full tuition scholarship awarded to exceptional high school seniors planning to attend college full time. #6 – United Negro College Fund/ Michael Jackson Scholarship: The Michael Jackson scholarship provides financial assistance to communication arts and social science students attending a UNCF college/university during the current academic year. AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship

AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship is open to outstanding minority graduate students. The fellowship is awarded for students doing doctoral dissertation research conducted under faculty sponsorship at any accredited university in the United States.

Fellowships are offered to members of racial and ethnic groups that are historically underrepresented in higher education. African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders all may apply.

Applicants can be in graduate programs that include education research, the humanities, or social or behavioral science disciplinary or interdisciplinary fields, such as economics, political science, psychology, or sociology. The fellowship can be used for tuition, fees, books, living expenses, equipment, travel, supplies, software, and other research-related expenses.

The fellowship is sponsored by The American Educational Research Association (AERA), a national research society located in Washington, D.C. The organization focuses on the importance of education and fosters the use of research to improve education and the public good. Complete information available online.


Costco Scholarship Fund For Minority Students

Costco Scholarship Fund is open to underrepresented minority students who are planning to attend either the University of Washington or Seattle University. The fund was established to provide qualified minority students access to education benefits.

Scholarship awards are based on financial need. Applicants must be of African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, or Pacific Islander heritage with a grade point average of 3.0 or above. Scholarship recipients must be entering college as freshmen. Deadline in September. Check the website for details.


Innovation in Education Scholarship

Who is eligible to apply for the Innovation in Education Scholarship?

  • Must currently be enrolled as a high school or college/university student within the United States or Canada.

  • Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (or the equivalent).

  • Must be a citizen of, permanent resident of, or hold a valid student visa in the United States or Canada.

  • Must have designed an innovative project that makes a difference in the lives of others (This could be a website, series of blogs, an app, fundraising event, etc.)

  • Must submit an essay describing the goal of the particular project and provide supporting documentation.

  • The essay, idea, or creation must be the applicant’s original work.

How much is the Innovation in Education Scholarship worth?

When is the Innovation in Education Scholarship application due?

All submissions must be uploaded no later than 11:59 pm PST on the 20th of each month. The submission window closes starting the 21st and will reopen on the 1st at 8:00 a.m. Apply online.

Courage to Grow Scholarship

The Courage to Grow Scholarship helps students achieve their higher education goals. By taking away some of the concerns such as “how will I pay for college,” students can concentrate on their education and focus on the task at hand.

Who is eligible for the Courage to Grow Scholarship?

Applicants must be a junior or senior US citizens in high school or college student with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better. A 250 word essay is also required: Explain in 250 words or less why you believe that you should be awarded this scholarship.

AHLEF Annual Scholarship Grant Program

Who is eligible for the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation Scholarship?

Nominees must be:

  • Enrolled full-time in an undergraduate hospitality management program at an AH&LEF affiliated school

  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 (2.0 if receiving Conrad Hilton Funds)

  • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident

  • Completed 1-2 years of school depending on the program

What is the amount of the scholarship?

Award amounts can range from $500 to $6,000 depending upon enrollment and recommended amount from school.

When is the scholarship due?

This AHLEF is a school-nominated scholarship, meaning that scholarship winners are selected by their respective schools-not by the Foundation. If you’re attending a Foundation-affiliated school, request nomination through AH&LEF’s Designated Contact Person .

All student nominees must complete sections 1-3 and 8 of the AH&LEF Scholarship Application, plus any additional sections as noted below. Additionally, under separate cover, participating schools are required to send a nomination form confirming their nominees and providing suggested award amounts.AH&LEF will not consider applicants for these awards without verification of nomination from their respective schools. AH&LEF academic scholarship applications are only accepted from January 1 to May 1 each year. Please note that any applications received from May 2 through December 31 will not be reviewed because the information provided will be outdated for the next school year. School-Nominated Scholarships If you've been notified by a faculty member that you have been nominated by your school, be sure to check the appropriate box under "school-nominated" scholarships, as well as any other self nominated ones you're interested in.
