Quite literally, we all live with art. Unfortunately, most people consider 'art' to be something they only find in a museum. This is why artists and the more enlightened amongst us, scratch their heads when people say, "I don't like art", or "I don't care about art", or worse yet, "I don't understand art". Quite frankly, I challenge anybody living in our world to go a single day without art. As an educator, I enjoy showing students how important art is and how it's integral with our world. Consider the font I'm using, it was designed by somebody with art training. The clothes we wear; the products we use; the cars we drive; sports logos we enjoy or movie sets that captivate our imagination are all because of the hand of somebody with art training. One can't read a publication, watch television, participate in a sport or even work in the kitchen without being saturated with graphics, text, products and goods that are made better by the hand of an artist.
With this in mind, my life is similarly eclectic. Skiing and hiking, scale modeling, collecting spiked helmets (Pickelhaube) and writing also fill my day along with art ("Whew!", right?). It's difficult for me to say what 'kind of artist' I am. This was easy in Graduate School, when I was a 'Ceramist'. Now, I can't say if I'm a sculptor, metal smith, ceramist, illustrator, or a mixture of all of them. It is possible for me to say this; My interests tend to run to the 'structural', whether I'm crafting a drawing, or creating the framework for a sculpture. This is because the varied aesthetics of architecture, aeronautical and industrial engineering and well crafted drawings have always caught my imagination. With this in mind, you'll find work in my portfolio from illustrations of tanks to abstractions of aeronautical forms.
It's certainly true that an artist never stops growing and experimenting; coming up with variations on their base concepts and interests and looking at the world in new ways. Hopefully, this will come through in my work and you'll enjoy what you see. If not, that's fine too. Just keep in mind that art touches you and your life every single day in ways most people don't even think about.
