Thyroid Cancer Survivor Vivian Olanan – 11 Years in Remission

Posted on October 2, 2011 by rojoson

Ms. Vivian Olanan was 41 years old when I operated on her thyroid gland. That was in the year 2000. She had a huge goiter under the classification of Grade III, meaning very visible and evident seen from a distance without the patient having to extend her neck. My preoperative diagnosis was a multiple colloid adenomatous goiter. I did a subtotal thyroidectomy with NO complications like hoarseness of voice and hypoparathyroidism-related spasm. The histopathology report showed a concomitant follicular carcinoma. I placed her on levothyroxine tablets which she has been taking up to now. I saw her on October 1, 2011. She is now 52 years old. She has no clinical signs of recurrence. Thus, she is now 11 years in remission. We both thank God for this remission.

Ms. Ramona Tapia was 28 years old in 2002 when I operated on her papillary thyroid carcinoma in Manila Doctors Hospital. The malignant tumor was 2.5 cm in its greatest diameter. I did a subtotal thyroidectomy (total lobectomy, isthmectomy, and pyramidalectomy). She was just on thyroid hormonal suppressive therapy for 7 years. She discontinued the hormonal therapy three years ago. As of November, 2011, she is 38 years old, no clinical sign of recurrence, and going 10 years in remission by February, 2012. We both thank God for this long remission.

Dr. Araceli Soria was 48 years old when I operated on her thyroid carcinoma in Manila Doctors Hospital in 1997. I did a total thyroidectomy with node dissection. The carcinoma was adherent to the trachea. The histopathology report showed papillary thyroid carcinoma. Postoperatively, she received radioactive iodine therapy and thyroid hormones. As of 2014, she has no clinical evidence or recurrence. She is now 65 years old, 17 years in remission. We both thank God for this long remission.

“…my wife is doing fine. She is happy if she can inspire others.” Dr. Juan Soria Jr.

In 2003, Ms. Tita Buenafe was 39 years old when she underwent thyroidectomy (total lobectomy) with selective neck dissection for a thyroid papillary carcinoma. In 2006, she underwent a modified neck dissection for a recurrent thyroid carcinoma on her neck. She received a total of 3 cycles of radioactive iodine therapy after her second operation. In 2013, she underwent a wide excision of her recurrent neck node followed by radiotherapy. She is now taking thyroid hormonal suppression therapy. She is now 50 years old, 11-years thyroid cancer survivor. We both thank God for this long survival.
