Breast Cancer Survivor Rosie Laredo – 17 Years in Remission

by Reynaldo O Joson on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 6:23pm

Ms. Rosie Laredo is from Occidental Mindoro.  She was 42 years old in 1994 when I did a modified radical mastectomy for her breast cancer.  Histopathology shows invasive ductal carcinoma, 2 cm. in diameter, with one node positive.  She underwent chemotherapy after the operation. After this, she just had regular check-up with me using sign-symptom directed surveillance approach.  I saw her this month for check-up.  She has no clinical evidence of recurrence.  She is now 59 years old, 17 years in remission.  We both thank God for this long remission after a simple treatment.

Breast Cancer Survivor Sylvia Ordoñez – 19 Years in Remission

by Reynaldo O Joson on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 9:58pm

Ms. Sylvia Ordoñez was 43 years old in 1992 when I operated on her2-cm  breast cancer in Manila Doctors Hospital.  I did a subtotal mastectomy and axillary (armpit) dissection.  Histopathology showed ductal carcinoma with nodes negative for spread.  After the operation, she received a course of radiotherapy.  As of October, 2011, at age 62, she has no evidence of recurrence – 19 years in remission.  We both thank God for this long remission.

Breast Cancer Survivor Raidis Bassig – 12 Years in Remission

by Reynaldo O Joson on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 6:31pm

Ms. Raidis Bassig was 48 years old in 1999 when I did a total mastectomy and armpit dissection on her in Manila Doctors Hospital.  The breast mass was 2.5 cm in diameter. The histopathology showed invasive ductal carcinoma.  Armpit nodes were negative for metastasis.  She did NOT receive any additional anti-cancer treatment after the operation.  There were NO hormonal testings such as ER, PR, and HER-2-NEU.  Surveillance approach was symptom- and sign-directed. She has been on regular check-up with me since after the operation.  She is now 60 years old (in 2011), 12 years in remission.  We both thank God for this long remission.

Breast Cancer Survivor Carmelita Brillo – 13 Years in Remission

by Reynaldo O Joson on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 7:02pm

In 1998, Ms. Carmelita Brillo underwent a modified radical mastectomy for an invasive ductal carcinoma on one of her breasts in Manila Doctors Hospital.  After the operation, she received a full course of radiotherapy.  She did not receive chemotherapy.  Four years after, in 2002, she had a recurrence in her lung.  I treated her with Tamoxifen, after 10 months, the lung metastasis completely disappeared. She took Tamoxifen for 5 years.  She is now 13 years in remission as of this writing in September 22, 2011.  She is now 77 years old.  We both thank God for this long remission.  A word about her red polka-dot dress.  She has been wearing it for the past 10 years whenever she would come to me for a check-up.  She considers it a good-luck dress.

by Reynaldo O Joson on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 8:53pm

Ms. Linda Diaz, from Mauban, Quezon, underwent total mastectomy in 1995 at age 47 for a breast cancer.  Two years after, in 1997, she had a local recurrence for which radiotherapy was done.  She received tamoxifen for 5 years.  Today, September 6, 2011, she came to me for her regular check-up.  She is now 63 years old, 14 years in remission counting from 1997. A breast cancer survivor indeed. We both thank God for this remission.

Ms. Linda Diaz came for a check-up on January 2014.  She is still in remission.  So she is now 17 years in remission after the local recurrence. (ROJ@14jan16)

Breast Cancer Survivor Luzviminda Austria – 11 Years in Remission After a Subtotal Mastectomy

by Reynaldo O Joson on Friday, August 12, 2011 at 5:24pm

Ms. Luzviminda Austria was 42 years old when I first treated her.  I did an excision of a fibroadenoma on her right breast.  The fibroadenoma was located near the outer side of her right areola.  Two years later, she developed another mass on her right breast, but this time it was in the area away from the site of the previous operation, on the upper inner quadrant of the breast.  I did a subtotal (less than total, wide excision is another synonymous term) mastectomy. The histopathology result showed papillary carcinoma.  She did NOT have any additional treatment after the operation, just monitoring and check-up. She came to me on August 11, 2011 for a check-up.  There was no sign of recurrence.  She is now 55 years old. She is 11 years in remission.  A breast cancer survivor indeed. We both thank God for this long remission.

Ms. Elvira Bautista had a breast cancer 16 years ago for which I did a modified radical mastectomy.  She did not receive any postoperative adjuvant treatment.  Recently, she developed another cancer on the opposite breast for which I also did a modified radical mastectomy (a second primary).  We both thank God for this long remission on her first cancer as there is no clinical evidence of recurrence from this cancer.
